Chamonix Triathlon Training

When we decided to build BlackRock Ski Lodge we realised that as well as providing a luxurious location for skiing holidays it would be the perfect base for Chamonix triathlon training camps.

We are passionate triathletes and want to share the best swim, bike, run locations that the Valley has to offer. Just staying at the Lodge, which sits at 1000m above sea level, we know, helps to kick-start improvements in stamina.

Chamonix - Triathlon Training Ground Extraordinaire

What makes BlackRock such a great training location is the ease of access to fantastic facilities and extra-ordinary terrain, all of which complete with stunning views of Mont Blanc Massif.

Swim Training – Choose from Chamonix’s 50m open air lap pool or for an open water option, the kilometre-long Lake Passy or the wonderful pools in Les Contamines.

Cycle Training – The local map reads like a list of Tour de France stages and the choices are endless. From the Lodge you can ride the Col du Montets (1461m), the Col des Aravis (1486m) and the Col du Forclaz (1526). The Col de la Colombiere (1613m) and col du Joux Plane (1691m) are also accessible as a longer ride or with the addition of bike support.

Run Training – There are hundreds of kilometres of undulating forest, mountain and riverside trails accessible from our doorstep. Train at altitude along the Great Balcons at between 2,000 and 3,000 metres, factor in strength building hills sessions just outside the back door or head down to Chamonix’s 300m sprung running track for speed and interval training.

What our clients say about Triathlon Team Take-Overs at BlackRock Ski Lodge

I had a dream: a triathlon training camp at BlackRock Ski Lodge, Anne Hardy

It all started on a Tuesday morning of November 2016 at the Bay Club, San Francisco. Like every Tuesday a bunch of us triathletes were riding indoor while watching videos of the Tour de France. Then one person said: “How about we go ride there for real some day?”

Then the coach responded: “Anne is French; she will help us do that”. I did not say anything but I was thinking: “What? But hell yes! I’ll bring you there”.

Actually I was super excited at the challenge and got to work on it almost immediately. But this would not be just about riding. It would be a triathlon trip where we would: swim, bike and run. In the Alps or the Pyrenees for the beauty and the challenge.

I searched the Internet for triathlon articles, reviews, testimonials about training camps in the Alps or the Pyrenees. I quickly shortlisted 3 places. BlackRock Ski Lodge was one of them. I talked to the 3 places. It did not take me long to decide that BlackRock Ski Lodge was the place.

Firstly, Lizzy knew it all. Having been a triathlete herself I felt she understood what I was after: lodging and nutritious meals. Secondly, the chalet seemed perfect: atop Les Houches in the foothills of the Massif du Mont-Blanc, just off running trails, 10 minute west of Chamonix, 20 km east and up from Lac de Passy. And finally, we could have a chef, which meant no grocery shopping or cooking for the entire week!

Of course the camp was not just about lodging and meals but for everything else we wanted, from photographer to bike ride support to running routes to shuttles, Lizzy knew someone who could help and had experience.

After several months of excitement with the preparation, the trip took place this past July. 2017. Twenty-six of us traveled from San Francisco to BlackRock Ski Lodge to swim, bike (lots of biking) or run every day for a week

And yes! We rode famous Tour de France routes: Col du Bettex, Col de Joux-Plane, Col de la Colombière and Barrage d’Emosson. We swam looking up the Mont-Blanc from Chamonix Olympic pool. We ran, still looking up the Mont-Blanc, on the steep trails of the UTMB. We ate awesome food while enjoying the beautiful and peaceful chalet.

It felt like a dream. Everyone is already talking about coming back at BlackRock Ski Lodge for more triathlon training. I can assure you: BlackRock Ski Lodge is not just about Ski. It is about Triathlon too.

Mont Blanc Triathlon 2018

Not unsurprisingly the backdrop for the Mont Blanc Triathlon is as picturesque as it sounds.

One of our favourite triathlons, this August event has grown in recent years to offer a fantastic mix of distances so there really is something to suite everyone from novice triathlete to endurance professionals.

There are also races for children aged 8-11 or 12-15, opening up the possibility of family triathlon holiday and the chance to introduce the next generation of athletes to this amazing sport. Or if you want to create the perfect family activity holiday we can help with that too.

Evergreen Triathlon 2018

An exceptional race, Evergreen Triathlon 2017 is set to be the biggest event to date. It takes place between Morzine, Chamonix and Champex and comprises of three distinct events 228, 118 and 58 of which we are proud to be supporters.

Evergreen 228 – a 4km swim in Lac de Montriond in Morzine followed by a 190km cycle through the Alps of the Haute Savoie in a route which includes the Cols de Joux Plane, de Romme de la Colombière, la Croix Fry, des Aravis and the Côte de Vaudagne and a 42.1km trail run through the winding mountain trails in a loop around Chamonix via Montenvers, Plan de l’Aiguille, Planprax and Flégère. The route has a positive height gain of over 7,850m.
